World of Make Believe

Michelle and I had some great times together. We used our imaginations and played make believe every weekend.

After playing with our Barbies (who always had interesting stories) we would put them away by pretending a tornado/hurricane/flash flood was coming. It always made cleaning up more fun.

We played school and baby sitter and doctor and dress-up and library and even lawyer. We used Michelle's dad's office as our lawyer's office. We each had a type writer and a phone to take notes and calls. Each book was a case file and we'd climb the ladder looking for Mr. Dickens' case (A Tale of Two Cities).

We played police on her tricycle and roller skates. We played detective at her house. We made gross food concoctions at mine. We constructed new inventions out of typing paper, scissors, and tape. We had scavenger hunts, fashion shows, dance recitals, and puppet shows. (Sometimes even with printed programs.)

We spent hours singing New Kids on the Block, Grease, and Pippi Longstocking in the back of her dad's truck.

I believe that that time spent imagining with Michelle was extremely valuable time. Not only sealing our friendship, but broading my mind as well. I know that physical activity is important, but I hope that my children will get as much mentally out of playtime as I did growing up.

What were your favorite things to do growing up?

WOW, thanks for the memories...I think my brain was OVERFOGGED by the bug spray. I can't believe we ran behind that thing! Did we not have good sense?

I agree - everything was outside, no batteries, no expensive toys... We used our imaginations. If you were lucky, you got a new bike twice in your childhood years. Most were passed down to you...and you were okay with that.

The big things I remember:
Tree houses
Kick the can
Riding bikes for hours and hours
Gymnastics in the front yard, when the grass was really thick
Hide and seek
Mother may I?
Popcicles in metal ice cube trays
2 stations that worked on the tv
One tv in the house

Jaime - I totally agree with you. "Make Believe" is so critical in expanding our world and the amazing possibilities in it.
I've been president, king, general, lawyer, scientist, soldier, pirate, good guy, bad guy, sheriff, doctor, etc...
I've fought back the evil hordes, the magical dragons, the invading aliens, etc...
Perhaps - today would be a good time to awaken the child within us and imagine...

You've pretty much summed up my favorite things. And snow cones... I liked walking to the snow cone place with dad after playing all day. Good times!
