A garden and a barbecue

On Mardi Gras day, I planted a garden! One of two that I'd like to accomplish. Cory picked out the (garnet and gold) marigolds and I dug and pulled and planted with Chesney cheering me on ("Keep digging Momma J - go girl." and "You sit [and drink your water], I dig for you.") It isn't completely finished though; I still need to buy mulch and a stone border... then start the other garden. I also dug up a dead tree in the backyard and threw it out to the road. But the main thing is that one of my five goals for the year is practically complete! I don't think that many of the flowers will survive though. It seems that we have a nice thick layer of clay about 5 inches down. Anyone know of any plants that thrive in clay?
We also pulled out Cory's BBQ pit for the first time and used the hammock that Michelle and Dave bought for us for our wedding (thanks guys!) We cooked pork chops for Cory and chicken, pineapple, and ham kabobs and grilled squash and zucchini for me. It was awesome, but my chicken could've been more seasoned...
All in all, I think it was one the of most productive and relaxing days I've had in a long time!
(By the way, I knew all of the words to Alouette already and I kind of figured that Rocket Man was about an estranged relationship. I put them in there to get back some funny comments like the Lionel Richie song. Guess no one got the jist.)

Congrats on the garden! I started on a much smaller scale. I planted some tulip bulbs in a pot last fall, not really expecting to actually get any results since it was my first try. But.....SURPRISE.....I have sprouts!!! Maybe in a month I will have an actual flower. I'll keep you posted on my budding babies.

I'm glad you've taken up gardening...your parents have green thumbs, and I'm sure you do too; you just haven't tapped into your inner gardener yet.
I have had plants for years, and this winter I planted herbs for the first time - that is pretty fun to do. I have rosemary, tyme, basil, and mint. I've been using it with cooking too. It has been fun to have a functional garden.
Glad you enjoyed Mardi Gras...it was just another day in the valley of the sun.

Wow! I like the pictures. Very nice flowers. To answer your other question, I would take a baggie of your dirt/clay to Home Depot, Lowes, or another garden center, and ask an expert what types of plants/flowers would grow best. If I remember correctly, a stick stuck in the ground would grow in Louisiana :) We're on 136 days of NO RAIN! They're predicting another 4 months, at least. Can you imagine that? It has been since the first week in OCTOBER since we've had rain.

I can't believe it! No rain since October! I don't know if I feel sorry for you or envious!

Pretty flowers Jaime! In Oklahoma,
all we have is clay but the flowers seem to grow if you add in
mulch to the clay. Grandma Nicklas
was a great gardener. Maybe you inherited some of her enthusiasm for working in the garden! I'm with Chesney,. "You go girl!!" Give that little princess a hug.
Love you. Granny
